Case study / Mobile & device integration

Pwnagotchi
Companion

Pwnagotchi Companion app icon

A familiar interface for a specialised device.

Pwnagotchi is a portable Wi-Fi research device. Pwnagotchi Companion brings its live information and controls to an iPhone or iPad, making the device easier to monitor and manage on the go.

Platform
iPhone & iPad / iOS 16+
Components
iOS app + Python plugin
Connection
WebSocket over Bluetooth tethering

01 / The challenge

Bring the device
into the user’s hand.

A small hardware display can only show so much at once. Monitoring device health, reviewing network activity, and changing operating modes benefit from a larger interface that is easy to navigate while the device is in use.

The project brings these tasks together on iOS while maintaining a direct connection to the Pwnagotchi.

02 / The experience

Live information.
Useful controls.

The app organises the device’s activity into focused views, with monitoring and controls available in one place.

Device dashboard

Uptime, battery, temperature, operating mode, and connection status provide a quick view of device health.

Screen mirroring

The Pwnagotchi display can be viewed directly in the app, alongside its live device information.

Network activity

Discovered access points and handshake activity are available without relying on the small hardware screen.

Location & logs

Optional iOS GPS sharing, location logging, and WiGLE-compatible exports add geographical context to observations.

Remote controls

Operating modes can be changed and the device rebooted remotely from the app.

Activity events

A live activity and connection log helps users understand what the device and connection are doing.

03 / The integration

Two components.
One connected experience.

The iOS app works with PwnIOS, an open-source Python plugin running on the Pwnagotchi. The plugin exposes a WebSocket connection over the Bluetooth-tethered network, allowing device information and commands to move between the hardware and the app.

Automatic reconnection, message queuing, and retry handling support the connection when interruptions occur. Optional PiSugar integration supplies battery information, while GPS sharing can be enabled by the user.
